In the ancient kingdom of Videha, ruled a wise and just king named Mandhatr. His reign was prosperous, but he was known for his insatiable curiosity and his love for riddles and puzzles. He had a queen, however, who was as cunning as she was beautiful, and she often sought to test the king's intellect. One day, the queen devised a particularly complex riddle. She summoned the king and said, 'My lord, I have a question that has troubled me. If a man has seven sons, and each son has a sister, how many children are there in total?' The king, accustomed to such intellectual jousts, pondered deeply. He considered the possibility of each son having a different sister, leading to a large number. He thought of various mathematical combinations. However, he could not arrive at a satisfactory answer. The queen, seeing his perplexity, smiled knowingly. The king, realizing he was outmatched, declared, 'I cannot solve this riddle. You must reveal the answer, and then I shall seek out someone whose wisdom surpasses even mine.' The queen revealed the answer: there was only one sister, for all seven sons shared the same sister. The king, impressed and humbled, vowed to find the wisest person in the land. His quest led him to the Bodhisatta, who was then a young boy named Mahosadha, living in the village of Khanjavapi. Mahosadha was known for his extraordinary intelligence and foresight, even at a tender age. The king, upon meeting Mahosadha, was astounded by his wisdom. He presented the queen's riddle to the boy. Mahosadha, without a moment's hesitation, answered correctly, explaining that if there is one sister, she is the sister to all her brothers. The king was overjoyed and appointed Mahosadha as his chief advisor. Mahosadha's wisdom became legendary. He solved disputes with unparalleled insight, advised the king on matters of state with great foresight, and navigated complex political situations with ease. He was not only intelligent but also deeply ethical and compassionate. He once devised a plan to trick a wicked king who was planning to invade Videha. Mahosadha instructed the king to dig a deep, wide trench around the city and fill it with water. He then ordered the construction of a bridge made entirely of lotus stems, so flimsy that it appeared impossible to cross. When the invading army arrived, they saw the seemingly impassable water and the impossibly fragile bridge. Fearing it was a trap or a magical defense, they retreated without a fight. Mahosadha's wisdom saved the kingdom on numerous occasions. He understood human nature, predicted outcomes, and always acted for the greater good. His counsel was so valued that the king often referred to him as the 'King of Wisdom'. Mahosadha's life was a testament to the power of intellect combined with virtue. He showed that true wisdom is not just about solving problems, but about understanding the underlying principles of life and using that knowledge for the benefit of all.
True wisdom lies not just in intelligence, but in the ethical application of that intelligence for the welfare of others. Foresight and understanding are the cornerstones of effective leadership.
