The Bodhisatta as a Humble Gardener

In a verdant kingdom, where gentle breezes whispered through blooming gardens and the laughter of children echoed in the royal palace, lived a Bodhisatta who, in this lifetime, chose the humble guise of a gardener. His name was Mallika, and his hands, though calloused from tending the earth, held a touch that could coax the most vibrant colors from the most stubborn seeds. He worked in the palace gardens, a place of unparalleled beauty, where exotic flowers bloomed year-round, their fragrances mingling in the air like sweet perfumes. The king, a just ruler, cherished his gardens, and Mallika was entrusted with their care.

The king had a beloved daughter, Princess Roja, renowned for her beauty and her kind heart. She often visited the gardens, her presence a gentle bloom among the flowers. One day, a powerful nobleman, driven by pride and a desire for greater influence, set his sights on marrying the princess. He was a man of great ambition, but his heart was devoid of genuine love and respect. He believed that by marrying the princess, he would gain control over the kingdom. He began to court her, showering her with lavish gifts and empty promises, but Princess Roja's heart remained unmoved. She saw the shallowness of his intentions.

The nobleman, accustomed to getting his way, grew impatient. He noticed how often the princess visited the gardens and how she would speak with the gardener, Mallika, about the flowers. He saw this as an opportunity, a way to discredit the humble gardener and win the princess's favor. He devised a wicked plan. He went to the king and accused Mallika of disrespecting the princess and of speaking to her in an impertinent manner. "Your Majesty," the nobleman declared, his voice dripping with feigned sincerity, "I overheard your gardener, Mallika, speaking most disrespectfully to Princess Roja. He boasts of his influence over her and claims she confides in him more than in her own father."

The king, though a just ruler, was also a father who loved his daughter dearly. The nobleman's words, laced with venom, struck a chord of concern. He summoned Mallika to his presence, his brow furrowed with worry and anger. "Mallika," the king said sternly, "I have been told that you have been speaking ill of me and disrespecting my daughter, Princess Roja. Is this true?" Mallika, though startled by the accusation, remained composed. He knew his own heart and the purity of his intentions.

The turning point arrived when Mallika, with his usual gentle demeanor, explained his relationship with the princess. "Your Majesty," Mallika began, his voice calm and respectful, "it is true that the princess often visits the gardens and speaks with me. But my conversations with her are solely about the beauty and care of the flowers. I have never spoken disrespectfully of you or of her. If she confides in me, it is because I offer her a listening ear and a genuine appreciation for the natural world, which she also cherishes."

Mallika then requested permission to demonstrate. He led the king and the nobleman to a specific part of the garden where a rare and delicate flower was about to bloom. "Your Majesty," Mallika explained, "this is the Moonpetal Orchid. It blooms only once a year, under the light of the full moon, and its fragrance is said to be the sweetest in the land. The princess has been eagerly anticipating its bloom." As the king watched, the nobleman scoffed, his arrogance surfacing. But as the moon rose that night, the Moonpetal Orchid unfurled its petals, releasing an exquisite fragrance that filled the air. Princess Roja arrived, her face alight with joy. She turned to Mallika, "Oh, gardener, it is as beautiful as you described!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine delight. She then spoke to the king, "Father, Mallika has always been such a kind and knowledgeable companion in the gardens. He shares my love for these wonders." The nobleman, witnessing the princess's open affection and admiration for Mallika, and the king's evident trust in his gardener, was utterly disgraced. His lies were exposed, and his pride crumbled.

Seeing the nobleman's shame and the princess's clear regard for Mallika, the king understood the nobleman's true motives. He banished the prideful nobleman from his court and from the kingdom, recognizing his manipulative nature. The king then turned to Mallika, "You have shown me the truth, Mallika. Your honesty and your gentle spirit are more valuable than any riches. You shall continue to tend my gardens, and know that you have earned my deepest respect." Mallika, the humble gardener, bowed, his heart filled with gratitude. The gardens, and indeed the kingdom, continued to flourish under his care and the king's just rule.

The moral of this story is that honesty and integrity, even in humble roles, will eventually be recognized and rewarded. False accusations and prideful ambition ultimately lead to disgrace, while a pure heart and genuine dedication will always shine through.
