The Tale of the Truthful Ascetic

In the verdant foothills of the Himalayas, where ancient trees whispered secrets to the wind and crystal-clear rivers flowed, lived a devout ascetic named Saccaṅkora. For many years, he had dedicated his life to rigorous spiritual practice, abstaining from worldly pleasures and seeking enlightenment through meditation and self-discipline. His hermitage, nestled amidst the tranquil forest, was a sanctuary of peace, attracting seekers of truth from far and wide.

One day, a group of merchants, their caravans laden with precious silks and spices, found themselves lost in the dense forest. Days turned into nights, and their supplies dwindled. Fear and desperation began to gnaw at them. As they stumbled through the undergrowth, they chanced upon the hermitage of Saccaṅkora. Relief washed over them as they saw the humble dwelling and the serene figure of the ascetic.

“Venerable sir,” the lead merchant pleaded, his voice hoarse with exhaustion, “we are lost and our provisions are scarce. We beg for your guidance and any sustenance you can spare.”

Saccaṅkora, his eyes filled with compassion, welcomed them warmly. He shared his meager food – wild roots and fruits – and offered them shelter for the night. As they rested, he spoke to them of the path of truth and the importance of honest living. The merchants, deeply impressed by his wisdom and austerity, promised to reward him generously if he could guide them safely out of the forest.

The next morning, Saccaṅkora, with his intimate knowledge of the forest, led them towards the nearest trade route. As they journeyed, a fearsome tiger, its eyes gleaming with hunger, emerged from the shadows, blocking their path. Panic seized the merchants. They froze, their faces pale with terror.

Saccaṅkora, however, remained calm. He knew that the tiger, like all living beings, was subject to the laws of karma. He stepped forward, his gaze steady, and addressed the beast:

“O mighty tiger, I have lived a life of truth and compassion. I have harmed no living being. By the power of this truth, I command you to turn back and leave us in peace.”

He then raised his hands, palms together, and with unwavering conviction, spoke the solemn truth of his virtuous life. The tiger, as if struck by an unseen force, hesitated. Its predatory instincts warred with the powerful aura of truth emanating from the ascetic. After a tense moment, the tiger slowly turned and vanished back into the dense foliage, leaving the merchants in stunned silence.

The merchants, witnessing this extraordinary display, were awestruck. They realized that the power of truth, spoken with sincere conviction, was a force greater than any physical might. They thanked Saccaṅkora profusely and, upon reaching their destination, fulfilled their promise by donating a significant portion of their wealth to the ascetic’s hermitage, ensuring he would have ample resources for his practices.

Saccaṅkora continued his ascetic life, his reputation for possessing the power of truth spreading throughout the land. He taught that by living a life of integrity, speaking truthfully, and acting with kindness, one could cultivate a spiritual strength that could overcome even the most formidable obstacles. His example served as a beacon, inspiring countless others to embrace the path of truth and righteousness.
